What the Service Involves
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound technology to create detailed images of the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and blood vessels attached to the heart. During the procedure, a trained sonographer applies a gel on your chest and places a transducer to capture the images. The test typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. Patients are usually asked to lie still on their left side and may be asked to change positions to get better images of different areas of the heart.
Preparation
No special preparation is typically needed for a standard echocardiogram. You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment. You might be asked to remove all clothing above the waist and wear a gown during the test.
Follow-up
After the test, a cardiologist will review the images and may discuss initial findings with you or schedule a follow-up appointment to go over the results in detail.
