ABI Testing
What the Service Involves
The ABI test involves measuring blood pressure in the arms and ankles using a standard blood pressure cuff and a special ultrasound device to detect the blood flow. The procedure compares the blood pressure in your ankle with the blood pressure in your arm, and the ratio obtained helps identify the presence of PAD.
Preparation
No special preparation is needed, but patients are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing and to avoid smoking or caffeine consumption a few hours prior to the test, as these can affect blood pressure.
During the Test
You will lie on a table, and cuffs will be placed around your arms and ankles. A small ultrasound device will then measure the blood flow in both locations as the cuff deflates. The test typically takes about 10-15 minutes.
