Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)
What the Service Involves
TEE involves inserting a small probe, similar to an endoscope, into the esophagus, which lies close to the heart. The procedure starts with the administration of a mild sedative and an anesthetic applied to the throat to ease discomfort and gag reflex. The probe emits sound waves to produce detailed images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and other structures from behind the heart, which is less accessible by standard echocardiography.
Preparation
Patients should not eat or drink for several hours prior to the test to ensure the esophagus is clear. You’ll need to remove any oral dental appliances and will receive specific instructions regarding medications on the day of the test.
During the Test
The test usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You’ll be monitored for blood pressure, oxygen levels, and heart rate throughout the procedure to ensure safety.
Benefits
TEE is extremely useful for detecting conditions such as heart valve abnormalities, blood clots, and aortic plaques. It is particularly important for planning surgical procedures and assessing treatment results.
